Fairfax County Dog Park Policies
Ever wonder how the idea of setting aside public land for off leash dog areas began here in Fairfax County? In 1999, a special task force of community leaders was formed to set policy for Off-Leash Dog Areas in Fairfax County. Their report was adopted by the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) and provides interesting background on the history of dog parks in Fairfax County. Public support for dog parks continues to grow stronger every year. A 2015 study commissioned by The Trust for Public Land indicates that, nationwide, off-leash parks are growing faster than any type of park with an overall growth rate of 20% between 2010 and 2015.
