Drainage Improvements-
We are aware that there has been a drainage problem in the north (small) end of the park which involves leakage from the water fixture and also storm water, especially during the winter months. Standing water inside the dog area creates muddy conditions which are unsightly and may have adverse health impacts.
In consultation with the Northern Virginia Soil Conservation District and the Fairfax County Park Authority, we developed a plan to address this problem, which was designated as our most important priority by the Caretakers at the August 2016 General Meeting.
Phase I of that plan involved filling in low lying areas of the north end with soil, the addition of a gravel bed around the water fixture, and the creation of a gravel walkway from the parking area to the all-weather entry gate. FCPA has since replaced the gravel walkway with asphalt to bring this area into ADA compliance. The original work was entirely funded by Westgrove PACK using funds donated by our Caretakers. This part of the plan dealt effectively with spillage from the water fixture and light rainfall.
Phase II dealt with major accumulations of storm water, particularly during the winter months. It involved building a swale to collect storm water and direct it outside the dog area according to storm water management best practices. We have experienced ongoing problems with leaks from the water fixture in the small end of the park. Stone has been added around the fixture to provide a place for spillage to go. That phase was funded primarily by FCPA.
The improvements that have been made require periodic maintenance, which is funded by Westgrove PACK. In February 2023, to prepare for the closing of the sound end for turf renewal, the swale was repaired and newly formed low lying areas were filled in.
It is clear that we still have some problems, particularly during the winter months. These problems will be addressed as part of general improvements to the north end, including ADA upgrades, replacement of the water fixture, installation of a dog pool, and eventual construction of an additional shade area. Plans for this phase of the project are being finalized and details will be posted here as they are available.
Park users are advised to use caution when conditions are poor and consider using a dog park on higher ground, We are working with FCPA to further improve the situation. Updates will be posted here as they are available.
We appreciate the patience and support of park users as this problem is addressed.
